Flipping The Script Is Great For Players!

This is a short note of thanks, encouragement, and commentary to all players in our group. "Flipping-the-script on the DM" is one sign that there are great players at the table. Not satisfied with the 'way things are' in terms of their adversaries, the PCs choose their own destiny by turning the tables on any 'given' situation.

Great heroes tend to shape their own destiny. I witnessed great PC-heroes doing that again last night. Some examples were:
  • With regard to the midnight meeting, you realized that you could control at least one of the unknown participants actions—and so, invited this person to meet you 1 hour before midnight. As a DM, I do not practice re-writing events in my favor, so, your PCs have managed to now control this event on your own terms!
  • With regard to the cost of funding certain plans - you acted on property (jems) to convert them to gold for potential use in ensuring you have the capital to support your strategies. It never matters what the DM thinks should happen, rather as heroes of the Vast, you are now writing a script of unplanned and unexpected events. In short, you are outwitting smart villains by executing smart and unexpected events! It takes a DM time to calculate, unexpectedly, the gp value of every weapon at market, however, I see that you trust me when I say - anything is possible. As the DM, I do not place "invisible-walls" in the campaign world, nor prohibit the unexpected.
  • With regard to the Kovasi mansion, just because the DM says nobody is home you still took action. You broke in and explored - and this shows determination, perseverance, and belief that events do not need to unfold in a preordained sequence. Persistence is a virtue! Additionally, just because the DM shows destroyed buildings on the map, you still went searching for clues and information!
  • With regard to rallying allies to your cause - you now have a 14th level Triadic Knight at your side! You have all 5 "Sentinels". You have the full backing of the Church of Gond. And all this happened in just one session.

So, you tell me? Time well spent? For the first time I have some doubt about what I thought would happen at midnight on 4 Mirtul, and for that matter—thereafter! Again, because it should never matter to players what the DM thinks should happen - please know I am as excited as you are to find out how the events will unfold! Thank you for letting me play too=-)

ANTHEM OF THE VAST

Brother Nikolai

"Dear friends – welcome back to St. Sollars. Justina Carilon has prepared your rooms. Fresh linen and towels await you. Eat until you are full, rest until you are well. Your company is always welcome here." -Brother Nikolai, Adorned of Ilmater- Revisit what Nikolai said on 3 Mirtul, here.

When will that priest of Ilmater stop talking and weeping, and talking....? Is he discussing something, or giving a sermon? I feel like I am back in the Respite Run Schoolhouse for girls. But seriously, he has been very nice—and I feel refreshed for the first time today. This place is huge; a person could live here in one of the rooms and nobody would ever know.

I am very impressed with Kelestri's patience! I peeked down the hall and swear I saw daggers darting from her eyes toward Animosus. [later...] That sounds like Kelestri screaming on the front steps of St. Sollars ... oh yes, and Animosus looks pretty peeved too! I'd better stay out of this one.

I like the idea of helping people. I like how they take care of everyone here. I feel very safe. The children, Alinka, Jozrel and Marrek, might need some hand-holding and care as they settle in. I can see across the cemetery field is the orphanage building that Justina described. It looks nice in the evening light. I think I'll take a slow walk past the headstones and visit with the children there. Pfhhh. ...I wonder what my fathers memorial stone will look like? Yes, it might do me good to walk through a peaceful field of death and visit those children—who are struggling to make sense of their new lives. How am I any different?

Corim's Thoughts

It's only been three days. I can't believe it. What will Amberle think when I tell her what I know!
Amberle.....Oh, Amberle.....Will I ever see her again?
My best friend..........Only my friend? Hmm.....It seems you have given me a lot to think about, Rose........Yes, quite a lot.

Sharisa

I've provided everything that was asked of me, including this forsaken task of sitting here at the gate for weeks on end. We've achieved victory for Shar over the heretical worshipers of Selûne. Yet, more arrive. The one named Evan I must watch closely, then go in for the kill. Perhaps this desk job has benefit yet...

The young elf boy will tell me, he appears the type to be easily seduced by affection—such simple prey.

And what sad creature is Vasht, that he knows not is own true name. Were his pathetic childhood days served in an orphanage as mine were? Perhaps he would serve the Lady of the Night in exchange for answers to his deepest questions...?

I've not been stirred so deeply by a woman until I looked into Kelestri's eyes. It was like looking into a cool pool of water surrounded by the fires of hell. I fear looking again into those eyes for they may burn me. Kelestri Umberton of Calimshan, I burn for you.
